3 Reasons Why Self-Love Plays a Vital Role in Developing your Leadership

If you don’t respect yourself, how can you respect others? If you don’t trust or value yourself, how can you do so with others? If you don’t practice self-love, how can you care about, invest in, and appreciate others? You have to feel worthy in order to make others feel valuable. Some confuse self-love with self-obsession. Some regard self-love as being selfish. Others think that if you love yourself too much, you view yourself as being above the rest. But self-love and self-appreciation gives you a sense of independence and plays a vital part in your journey to develop your leadership.

A quote by Lucille Ball sums it up: “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” In essence, leadership is about creating healthy relationships where productivity is inspired and motivated. These 3 reasons prove that self-love plays a vital role in boosting self-esteem and develop your leadership:

  1. Self-love is the foundation where leadership characteristics starts.“People go through the fire for a leader that loves them. Because they trust such a leader. It unleashes the very highest levels of productivity” said Nerisha Maharaj, Author of Self-Love: The Authentic Path to Conscious Leadership. People follow authentic people who have characteristics like empathy, trustworthiness, and are approachable etc. Not someone who is merely there to achieve targets and screams at everyone to do their jobs. But for leaders with these characteristics self-love is at the core. Live a life filled with appreciation and then you will appreciate what others do and value their worth.
  2. Self-love comes from knowing who you are.To know you is to love yourself. We are often taught that your self-worth is determined by what you achieve in life. Leaders who truly know themselves are authentic and true. Their self-esteem is fuelled by knowing who they are and what they want. In turn this makes them trustworthy, on-path and determined.
  3. Self-love leaders have winning attitudes and are open to feedback.People who have self-love feel secure in themselves. They take feedback as being helpful and a way to advance them. This makes for a winning attitude as they are positive and always see the room for improvement.

This is not to say that if you love yourself everything is perfect and you are set out to be a great leader. No, even great leaders doubt themselves and are sometimes their own worst critics. The key is to start with self-love in your leadership development journey. It is bound to put you on the right path toward success.
